Wizz Air has secured the prestigious title of "Global Environmental Sustainability Airline Group of the Year" for the second consecutive year at the CAPA Asia Aviation Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

The CAPA Environmental Sustainability Awards for Excellence highlight the efforts of airlines, airports, and suppliers that prioritise addressing climate change within their operations.

These awards are meticulously evaluated by CAPA's analysts and carbon reduction experts at Envest Global. CAPA, a trusted source of market intelligence for the aviation and travel industry, is part of the Aviation Week Network.

Wizz Air earned this recognition from CAPA due to its unwavering commitment to sustainability. This European ultra-low-fare airline boasts one of the world's youngest and most environmentally friendly aircraft fleets, with the lowest carbon emissions compared to its competitors.

In the fiscal year 2023, Wizz Air achieved a remarkable reduction of 11% in its carbon emissions intensity, reaching 53.8 grams per passenger/km, thanks to significant investments in its fleet. The airline has been replacing older aircraft with the latest technology, such as the Airbus A321neo, which delivers a substantial 20% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 50% decrease in noise and nitrogen oxide emissions.

Wizz Air has also crafted a clear and actionable strategy for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This strategy includes securing agreements and partnerships with key suppliers, including Mabanaft, Neste, OMV, and Cepsa.

The airline has taken a proactive stance in supporting SAF development, investing £5 million in Firefly Green Fuels, a UK-based biofuel company, and participating, as part of Indigo Partners, in a $50 million investment in the US-based SAF start-up CleanJoule. Notably, in May 2023, Wizz Air became the first Hungarian airline to conduct commercial SAF testing at Budapest Airport and operated five flights from Budapest using a 35% SAF blend.

József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air, expressed his gratitude for receiving the CAPA Global Environmental Sustainability Award for the second year in a row.

He emphasised the airline's dedication to reducing CO2 intensity by 25% by 2030 and its sustainable approach, which combines advanced aircraft technology and efficient operations, resulting in industry-leading emissions per passenger per kilometre.

Váradi also underscored the significant investments made in SAF, securing volumes for the impending mandates in 2025 in Europe and actively contributing to the advancement of new aviation technologies. Wizz Air is proud to lead the way toward more sustainable air travel and to set standards for the industry.

Despite the challenging circumstances posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wizz Air emerged as a success story in Europe. While overall travel in Europe is still below pre-pandemic levels, with many airlines yet to fully recover their networks and operations, Wizz Air not only outpaced most of its peers but also expanded its overall traffic by over a third. The airline demonstrated exceptional adaptability and flexibility during the pandemic and in response to the fluctuations in the travel recovery phase.

As Europe's travel industry continues its resurgence, Wizz Air is poised to play a prominent role and further enhance its commitment to sustainability. The airline is continually refining its business and operational model, with a focus on improving its flying performance, financial stability, and customer service."
