The Sustainable Markets Initiative has proudly announced that Hitachi is the recipient of the prestigious 2023 Terra Carta Seal.

This esteemed accolade is bestowed upon global companies at the forefront of championing a future that is both climate and Nature-positive.

To earn the Terra Carta Seal, companies must showcase the success of impactful, large-scale projects, initiatives, or strategies aligned with one or more of the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s ten Terra Carta Articles.

These Articles form the foundation of the Terra Carta, the guiding mandate of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, offering a roadmap and framework to expedite the transition toward an ambitious and sustainable future that prioritises Nature, People, and Planet in global value creation.

The Hitachi Group remains steadfast in advancing its Social Innovation Businesses, collaborating diligently with stakeholders to contribute to the development of a sustainable society.

Hitachi's recognition with the Terra Carta Seal stems from its unwavering commitment to sustainability, notably exemplified by Hitachi Energy’s role in the energy transition. The company's high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology facilitates the transmission of bulk renewables over long distances with minimal losses, a significant stride toward a sustainable energy future.

A tangible manifestation of this technology is evident in the Champlain Hudson Power Express project, currently under construction to link power grids between Quebec, Canada, and the New York City metro area.

This connection will facilitate the delivery of clean, renewable hydropower between Canada and New York, aligning with New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, aiming for 70 per cent renewable energy by 2030. Projections suggest the project will reduce CO2 emissions by an average of 3.9 million metric tonnes annually, equivalent to removing 44 per cent of passenger vehicles from New York City.

HVDC technology's capability to bring substantial electricity directly into cities is pivotal for ensuring a sustainable and affordable power supply, significantly increasing the utilisation of renewable energy and fostering carbon neutrality.

Hitachi proudly joins a distinguished group of 16 companies from various regions and industries in receiving the 2023 Terra Carta Seal.
