The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) announced the opening of a new office in Wuhan, China, overlooking the scenic East Lake.

This move reflects WBCSD's commitment to supporting sustainable development in China, a crucial player on both the global and domestic stage.

Hubei Province, where Wuhan is located, holds strategic importance for transportation, resource allocation, and the Chinese economy. This is further highlighted by the province's strong performance in both imports and exports, which reached 102.03 billion yuan during the first two months of 2024, reflecting a 12.7% year-on-year increase.

Five key industries in Hubei – optoelectronic information, new energy/intelligent vehicles, life and health, high-end equipment, and BeiDou satellite systems – are particularly relevant to sustainable development efforts, both in China and worldwide.

The opening ceremony, held during the "Cherry Blossom Viewing: Business Cooperation & Fortune 500 Dialogue with Hubei" event this week, featured speeches from prominent figures.

Earlier in March, a delegation led by Peter Bakker, WBCSD President and CEO, visited China to finalise plans for the new office. “As the world is turning to businesses for sustainability solutions, WBCSD’s ability to promote sustainable development and collaborate across industrial and commercial sectors will expand our reach with our presence in Wuhan,” commented Mr Bakker. “We also anticipate that bringing together innovative technologies and working practices will provide more effective solutions for global challenges, such as climate change and nature loss.”

WBCSD China Representative Office Chief Representative, Mr. Zhou Weidong believes the new office will facilitate the exchange of advanced international sustainability concepts and practices with China. It will promote innovative Chinese solutions in global sustainability agendas while encouraging Chinese participation.

The WBCSD Hubei Office opening signifies a step forward for Hubei in becoming a global leader in green development. It will attract international resources to fuel the province's green transformation, promoting high-level economic openness and high-quality growth.
