Irish People Ready to Pay More for Sustainable Products

A new study by Royal London Ireland has revealed a growing appetite among Irish consumers for sustainable products.
Over seven in ten people indicated they are prepared to spend extra for items that are better for the environment. This willingness to pay a premium ranges from a modest 5% increase to a substantial "whatever it takes" approach.
Younger people are pushing for sustainable products, showing a much stronger preference than older generations. About 20% of them are willing to pay 10% more for sustainable options, and another 17% would spend up to 5% extra. Also, 9% are ready to pay 20% more, and 15% would accept price hikes between 30% and 75% for sustainable choices.
Despite this positive trend, the study underlines a lack of trust in the financial sector’s ability to meet sustainability goals. This is particularly true for Generation Z, with nearly half expressing doubts about the industry’s commitment. While there is hope that the financial sector will become more socially responsible, concerns about its environmental impact remain.
Joe Charles, the proposition director at Royal London Ireland, pointed out how crucial it is for financial institutions to earn consumers' trust. He said that while progress is being made, there is still work to be done in clearly sharing the positive steps the industry is taking.
