Danone to Reduce its Methane Emissions

Danone, a leading food company and one of the biggest dairy companies in the world, has just announced a global plan to cut methane emissions from its fresh milk supply chain by 30% by 2030.
Danone expects to eliminate 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent methane emissions by 2030. This ambitious goal builds on Danone's recent achievements, including a 14% reduction in methane emissions between 2018 and 2020.
According to the IPCC, reducing methane emissions has immediate climate benefits that carbon dioxide reductions alone cannot deliver.
Dairy production from cattle accounts for an estimated 8% of overall human-caused methane emissions from agriculture and livestock operations, which account for roughly 40% of worldwide methane emissions.
The food company plans to achieve its goals in the following ways:
working with farmers to implement regenerative dairy practices and develop innovative solutions;
collaborating and partnering with peers, governments and Environmental Defense Fund to scale innovation, reporting and advance financing models;
advocating and engaging with governments to improve methane policies, data, and reporting as well as funding for research and to support farmers transitioning to regenerative dairy practices.
Danone is the first food company to set a goal for reducing methane emissions that matches the goals of the Global Methane Pledge, which was released at COP26. The company will report on its methane emissions as part of its extra financial disclosure.
