Highlights

  • PD Ports aims to become the UK's most sustainable port company.

  • Two new electric cranes at Tees Dock, named Net Zero Hero and Lean Green Machine by local schoolchildren.

  • Launches sustainability strategies for carbon reduction, community engagement, and youth development.

PD Ports, a top UK port operator, is zeroing in on sustainability. The company has introduced a new plan to become the greenest port in the country, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and support the local community.

A major step in this plan is naming two new electric cranes at Tees Dock that are powered by renewable electricity. These cranes, which can lift a total of 140 tonnes, are now called Net Zero Hero and Lean Green Machine, thanks to a contest among local schoolchildren. This event shows PD Ports' commitment to involving the next generation and promoting environmental awareness.

The crane naming ceremony took place alongside the launch of the company's detailed sustainability strategy. This plan sets clear goals for cutting carbon emissions, protecting biodiversity, and creating opportunities for young people. PD Ports aims to introduce 3,000 young people to the ports and maritime industry by 2030, investing in the future workforce and building a skilled talent pipeline.

In recent years, the company has reduced its environmental impact. This includes using renewable energy, adopting electric vehicles, and investing in low-emission equipment. The arrival of the Emerald Duchess, a state-of-the-art low-carbon dredger, adds to PD Ports' commitment to innovation and sustainability.

PD Ports CEO Frans Calje, says, "It was a delight to welcome the children from Captain Cook Primary School to unveil the brilliant names for the electric cranes on Tees dock’s bulks quay – they were smart and engaged and full of questions about the port and its future.

“That sort of engagement with young people – asking them to think about what future holds and introducing them to potential career opportunities – is what this strategy is all about.

“The strategy is our public commitment as a business to be held accountable for our actions, both now and in the future.

“It contains clear targets for us to achieve, in terms of decarbonisation and biodiversity; our commitment to our local communities and to helping the region’s young people achieve their potential and to acting with best practice and good character in all we do.”
