DHL Express, a global leader in the logistics industry, has signed an agreement with Cosmo Oil Marketing, a Japanese company dealing in oil and petroleum products for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

DHL will buy 7.2 million litres of SAF every year, starting in April 2025, to use in its regular air cargo shipments in Japan. This marks the first time in Asia that an international express company will use SAF for scheduled cargo flights.

The SAF will be produced at Cosmo Oil's new facility in Japan, which will start functioning in 2025. Cosmo Energy Holdings' subsidiary, Saffaire Sky Energy, will make SAF to help lower emissions in DHL's air freight services.

DHL has committed to using SAF as part of its broader goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its business operations.

Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan, said: "We are pleased that, through our agreement with Cosmo Oil Marketing, we will be the first international express provider in Japan to use the locally produced SAF on scheduled regular cargo flights.

"SAF is currently the most effective solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in air transport. Moving forward, as part of our responsibility to customers in Japan, we are committed to promoting emission-reduced shipping solutions and to contributing to the reduction of the transport sector's environmental impact."

Koji Moriyama, President, Representative Director and Chief Executive Officer of Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd., said: " We are delighted to contribute to the decarbonization efforts of DHL Express and its customers through SAF, one of our key decarbonization products.

"SAF plays an essential role in the decarbonization of the aviation industry, and we are excited to be part of this important initiative. Moving forward, we will continue to support the realization of a decarbonized society, starting with this collaboration, by promoting the use of SAF."
