  • The project will help build a 200 MW facility plant in North America, scaling up clean energy shift and decarbonisation efforts there.

  • The plant will produce 50,000 tonnes of e-methane annually.

StormFisher Hydrogen, a specialist in e-fuel projects, has joined forces with MAN Energy Solutions to expand the production of e-fuel in North America by developing a large-scale Power-to-X plant in the region.

Once the construction of the 200 MW plant is complete, it will produce green hydrogen and e-methane from a local biogenic CO₂ source.

The facility will use solar and wind energy to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis, a process in which water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. After that, the green hydrogen will be mixed with carbon dioxide (CO₂) from natural or organic sources, also known as biogenic CO₂, in a methanation reactor to create e-methane.

The e-methane production at the plant is expected to be around 50,000 metric tonnes per year, similar to the energy content of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Judson Whiteside, Chief Executive Officer at StormFisher Hydrogen, said: “The planned facility is a major component in StormFisher Hydrogen’s plans to support increasing e-fuel production capacity in North America and reinforcing American leadership in the energy sector. MAN Energy Solutions has the expert knowledge in methanation required to deliver the pre-FEED study to keep the project moving forward on a successful track.”

E-methane produced using this method is in line with North American pipeline standards and perfectly integrates with the existing natural gas infrastructure without any major changes to the system. Hence, the project is cost-effective and reduces emissions in the energy sector.

MAN Energy Solutions will carry out a test at its facility in Germany as part of the project to improve the purity of e-methane, reducing any leftover component during the production process.

Wagner Canelhas, Regional Sales Manager at MAN Energy Solutions Houston, added: “With this project, MAN Energy Solutions reinforces its position as a global leader in methanation for Power-to-X applications. Our technology enables the smooth integration of e-Methane into existing infrastructure, reducing costs and accelerating its adoption worldwide.”
