Moeve, RFOcean Sign Deal for Green, Fuel-Flexible Chemical Tankers

Moeve is wholly committed to developing low-carbon fuels and fuel-efficient tankers to decarbonise global shipping.
The vessels are 30% more fuel-efficient compared to the ageing fleet.
The global integrated energy company Moeve, which focuses on sustainable mobility and energy, has partnered with Norwegian tanker owner RFOcean to build a series of modern, ultra-efficient, sustainable, and fuel-flexible chemical tankers.
The vessels, with a capacity of 6,600 deadweight tonnes (DWT), are expected to be delivered and up and running between 2025 and 2026. They will operate on methanol and feature stainless steel cargo tanks, making them more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
These ships will be powered by electric motors connected to generators, replacing old, ageing, less sustainable engines. This helps them function at different speeds more efficiently while using multiple fuels, including biofuels.

The design can be adjusted and is subject to future upgrades, like replacing diesel generators with fuel cells or battery-powered generators, making them greener and cleaner. Also, the new tankers are about 30% more fuel-efficient than their traditional counterparts.
This partnership is part of Moeve's efforts to reduce carbon emissions in shipping. The company is primed for more biofuel production, increasing its capacity from 1 million tonnes to 2.5 million tonnes by 2030. Besides, it is also involved in large-scale green hydrogen projects in Spain, supporting the production of green methanol and ammonia for greener shipping fuels.
Alice Acuña - EVP Trading at Moeve, said: "We are glad to partner with RFOcean and bring these advanced vessels into our fleet. These state-of-the-art, truly fuel-flexible vessels will be at the forefront of the maritime industry’s continued steps to reduce its environmental impact and advance cleaner energy alternatives.
"This move is fully aligned with Moeve’s strategy to reduce its carbon emissions and those of its customers, and to become a leading provider of clean marine solutions this decade."
