  • The partnership aligns with Europe's upcoming fuel mandates and could meet 40% of the required eSAF volume.

  • These synthetic fuels will reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help the aerospace industry meet European decarbonisation goals.

Power2X, an Amsterdam-based energy transition specialist, has collaborated with Honeywell to produce electrofuels (eFuels) at the Port of Rotterdam.

The energy transition leader will adopt Honeywell's eFiningTM methanol-to-jet processing technology to produce eSAF. Earlier in October, Power2X, in partnership with Advario, agreed to construct an e-SAF facility in the Port of Rotterdam. This facility will be a large-scale production and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel and synthetic, ultra-low-carbon fuels in the Port of Rotterdam.

Power2X is partnering with Honeywell to produce eFuels at the facility by combining locally made green hydrogen and imported methanol (made from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon). This tie-up aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

How are eFuels made?

They combine green hydrogen (from green energy and water) with carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce eMethanol, which can further be processed into eSAF or other forms of synthetic fuels.

The facility in the Port of Rotterdam can produce over 2,50,000 tonnes of eSAF annually, reducing CO2 emissions by about 88% compared to traditional jet fuel. This can also be mixed with regular jet fuel without changing current aircraft or fuel systems.

"Accelerating the energy transition requires developing next-generation energy assets at an industrial scale and deploying cutting-edge technology to unlock new value chains, delivering clean energy where it's most needed,” said Occo Roelofsen, CEO of Power 2X. “Our collaboration with Honeywell on eFuels Rotterdam marks a significant step forward in producing Sustainable Aviation Fuels in the heart of Europe."

"The world needs a greater supply of sustainable aviation fuel in order to help decarbonize the aviation sector," said Barry Glickman, vice president and general manager of Sustainable Technology Solutions at Honeywell. “Honeywell’s eFining technology uses hydrogen and carbon dioxide, two abundant, low carbon feedstocks, to produce SAF that helps airlines meet ambitious European fuel mandates.”
