  • Major global banks have financed the loan to firm up the company's long-term sustainability goals.

  • The proceeds will be used to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption, optimise resources, and support Singapore’s digital economy.

Singtel, Asia's leading communications technology group, has secured a S$643 million green loan for its data centre arm, Nxera, to develop a new data centre in Singapore called DC Tuas.

The funding, backed by major banks like DBS, OCBC, Standard Chartered, HSBC, and UOB, will be used to build a sustainable, high-tech facility.

DC Tuas has a 58 megawatts (MW) power capacity and will be the country's most connected and energy-efficient data centre. Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority and Infocomm Media Development Authority have awarded it the Green Mark Platinum certification, acknowledging its sustainable design and operations.

The new facility has many advanced features, including next-generation liquid cooling systems for high-intensity computing tasks like AI and enterprise workloads. It is expected to be fully operational before 2026, optimising for land, power, and water efficiency. The cooling system supports over 30kW per rack.

It is one of the most efficient data centres in the telecommunication industry, operating with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) below 1.25.

Singtel's data centre subsidiary Nxera targets net-zero emissions for its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2028. The loan proceeds are in line with Singtel’s Olives sustainable financing programme, tying the company's financial strategy to long-term sustainability goals.

Mr. Arthur Lang, Singtel Group Chief Financial Officer, said: “DC Tuas will feature a green design and build, as well as next-generation liquid cooling systems, making it ideal for meeting the demand from enterprises for high-intensity compute and AI workloads.

"Sustainability is a core part of our data centre business, and we are committed to developing and growing the industry’s most sustainable, next-generation digital assets. This loan will enable us to support Singapore’s digital economy while reducing our carbon footprint in keeping with our net zero goals.”

In 2023, Singtel secured a S$535 million green loan for the development of its two other data centres, DC West and DC Kim Chuan.
