The Zayed Sustainability Prize, a prestigious award in sustainability, has introduced a new category named 'Climate Action' to honour and promote innovative solutions that tackle climate change and safeguard the Earth's natural resources.

The Climate Action category was launched during the UAE's Year of Sustainability to accelerate sustainable development and in preparation for the COP28 hosted in the UAE later this year.

H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize and UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology stated that the launch of the Climate Action category is vital as the UAE prepares to host COP28 and marks the UAE's Year of Sustainability.

He emphasised the importance of recognising and supporting innovative solutions that protect the planet and people from the impacts of climate change, and the Prize reinforces this commitment by promoting inclusive sustainable development that will limit warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

H.E. Al Jaber emphasised that the Climate Action category is a vital expansion of the Prize's mission in this decade of action. He looks forward to receiving submissions from across the world, encouraging and rewarding innovative solutions for transforming climate promises into practical actions that lead to sustainable and inclusive progress for our planet and societies.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, founded in 2008 to honour the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's humanitarian and sustainability legacy, acknowledges organisations and high schools that deliver impactful and inspiring innovations in Health, Food, Energy, Water, Global High Schools, and now Climate Action.

The Climate Action category of the Zayed Sustainability Prize will expand its scope by recognising and awarding innovative solutions that address the pressing challenge of climate change while protecting and improving the natural environment. This includes organisations that enhance climate adaptation, improve resilience, and deploy environmental solutions. The new category is open to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and nonprofit organisations (NPOs).

For 15 years, the Zayed Sustainability Prize has empowered sustainable solutions in health, food, energy, and water. Now, with its Climate Action category, the Prize aims to scale innovative solutions that address environmental issues and enhance communities' climate resilience as the world's efforts to combat climate change continue to grow.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize marks 15 years of impact with a new Climate Action category. The Prize has rewarded over 106 winners, benefitting 378 million people globally. Winners receive US $600,000, while schools can claim up to US $100,000.

Entries for the Climate Action category, open to small and medium-sized enterprises and nonprofit organisations, will be accepted until May 23, 2023, with winners announced in Abu Dhabi.
