WorldGBC and GlobalABC to Advance Sustainable Buildings
The goal is to make the building sector more sustainable and climate-resilient.
Help countries set climate goals to ensure that the sector achieves the global target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
The Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) to promote the transition towards sustainable and resilient buildings.
The agreement will help the building sector meet climate goals for 2030; GlobalABC and WorldGBC have a large global network, which they use to create policies and solutions for green buildings.
The WorldGBC, with over 75 Green Building Councils (GBCs) across different countries, represents businesses working towards a sustainable built environment. And, GlobalABC has more than 33 members from various countries.
The organisations are already working on two projects—Buildings Breakthrough and Déclaration de Chaillot—and developing a tool called the NDC Scorecard for Sustainable Buildings. The projects aim to create standards for buildings that are nearly emission-free and resilient to climate impacts by 2030. The tool helps countries assess their climate action plans.
They are also supporting national roadmaps to guide countries in reducing their carbon emissions in the building sector. These roadmaps are already being developed in Asia, Africa, and Europe.
The agreement was officially announced at COP29, which is ongoing in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Cristina Gamboa, CEO WorldGBC said: “Our global community brings together decades of experience with regional insights and strong public-private sector networks to drive local action. We represent countries covering 62% of global GDP and 60% of the world’s building stock. So we’re delighted to leverage the strength of our outreach to collaborate with the GlobalABC and deliver the action we know is urgently required by the sector to ensure a resilient and inclusive future – particularly in communities most vulnerable to climate change.”
Gulnara Roll, Head of the GlobalABC, said: “Our partnership with the World Green Building Council marks a significant step forward in uniting global efforts for a sustainable and resilient built environment. By leveraging our combined networks, we can accelerate impactful action, particularly in developing countries where the need for climate-resilient infrastructure is critical. Together, we’re committed to supporting countries in setting ambitious standards and roadmaps to achieve net-zero emissions, ensuring that the building sector aligns with the 1.5ºC climate trajectory and leaves no community behind.”
