Sovereign Metals Creates an ESG Framework to Help Malawi Advance Social Initiatives.

Sovereign Metals has built an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) framework in Malawi, where its flagship Kasiya rutile deposit is located, to guide and enhance its corporate social responsibility operations.

Sovereign is pursuing several development efforts to help Malawi and its local communities, intending to become a market leader in terms of corporate social responsibility for the country through its ESG framework.

The company is advancing local infrastructure with the construction of a new community centre at Malingunde and the commissioning of water bores across licenced tenure to provide drinking water. It also promotes education through a school upgrade programme and a scholarship programme for high school learners.

Furthermore, Sovereign claims to have built international-standard mining industry facilities in Lilongwe, including a rutile sample laboratory, and engaged a diversified staff, with critical exploration and mining-related skills being developed through a training programme.

Dr Julian Stephens, Sovereign Metals' managing director, said:

"Over the last decade, Sovereign has worked very hard to establish and maintain a strong and positive social licence to operate in Malawi."

“The future development of the Kasiya Rutile Project will bring substantial benefits to Malawi in terms of GDP, royalties, taxes, employment, training, local business opportunities, and community development."
