The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and CMA CGM Group, a France-based shipping and logistics company, have renewed their agreement on sustainable shipping and digital innovation.

The companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand a previous agreement and prepare Singapore to become a leading maritime hub. The partnership will focus on decarbonisation, digitalisation, maritime innovation, and workforce development.

CMA CGM will add more vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and methanol as part of its decarbonisation efforts. The company has invested around USD 20 billion in low-carbon ships and will run 153 vessels on biogas and synthetic fuels, both alternative fuels, by 2029. Also, CMA CGM Iron, its first dual-fuel methanol vessel, will arrive in Singapore at the end of this month.

For digitalisation, the agreement entails plans to develop a carbon accounting system, improve data sharing between ships and shore, and strengthen maritime cybersecurity. The companies will launch pilot projects to test digital tools that monitor emissions and pass sensitive information.

In order to build up maritime innovation, CMA CGM will connect its innovation platforms, like ZEBOX Group, with Singapore's local innovation hub, PIER71™.

The agreement also includes the provision of training programmes, leadership exchanges, internships, and scholarships for workforce development. In association with the Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF), CMA CGM will train seafarers to handle alternative fuels, like ammonia and methanol, preparing them for the industry's transition toward green energy.

Mr Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, said: "This MoU marks a significant milestone of our collaboration with CMA CGM and also demonstrates CMA CGM’s significant support towards our shared vision to drive decarbonisation and digitalisation and support manpower development within the maritime sector. By leveraging our collective expertise and resources, we aim to create a more sustainable and innovative maritime ecosystem."

Mr Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, commented: "I am pleased to renew our partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, strengthening Singapore’s position as a key maritime hub for CMA CGM.

"Together, we will drive forward innovative initiatives, particularly in the adoption of alternative fuels and digitalisation to enhance efficiency and performance. This collaboration reflects our commitment to leveraging top expertise to build a more resilient and sustainable global trade.”
