Putting sustainability at the forefront, SPAR Slovenia is taking a big step by saying goodbye to single-use plastic bags in its fruit and vegetable section.

They are paving the way as the first retailer in the country to make this shift. Instead, you'll find biodegradable bags or reusable SPAR mesh bags starting this year.

SPAR Slovenia's efforts in this direction were acknowledged with the FDI Award Slovenia 2023, recognising their positive impact on the local economy.

Being the trendsetter, SPAR Slovenia is leading the charge in eliminating single-use plastic bags from the fruit and vegetable section, reducing 105 tonnes of plastic every year.

To tackle the plastic problem, SPAR Slovenia is introducing greener alternatives, like biodegradable bags and reusable SPAR mesh bags. They have even come up with a handy SPAR shopping bag that has a pocket for storing mesh bags – making it easy for customers to be a part of the eco-friendly initiative.

As proud holders of the Green Star sustainability certificate, SPAR Slovenia is part of the Green Leaders, businesses that make sustainability a core part of what they do.

Recognising SPAR Slovenia's positive impact, the FDI Award Slovenia 2023 was well-deserved. This prestigious award, given by the Ministry of Economy, Tourism, and Sport in collaboration with the Public Agency SPIRIT, highlights SPAR Slovenia's contribution to the national economy since 1991.

From innovative customer approaches to solid support for the local community, the award acknowledges SPAR's sponsorship of charitable organisations and events, along with their consistent backing of local farmers and suppliers – all contributing to the growth of the local economy.

David Kovačič, CEO of SPAR Slovenia, sees the FDI Award Slovenia as a nod to their commitment to delivering quality, innovation, and sustainable business practices. For him, this award is not just recognition but also motivation for SPAR's further growth in Slovenia, reinforcing their successful partnership with the local community.
