Clowes Developments has partnered with BE Design, ESG specialists, to develop and deliver the ESG strategy.
As the construction industry wakes up to the environmental impact of building, industry leaders are looking for practical solutions.
Clowes is now embedding ESG into their daily operations and decision-making across the business, from land planning to development and asset management. The company has always believed in the principle of ‘building for future generations’ and the board are now investing in making this a long-term strategy.
This year Clowes has taken action to make this a reality. The team have reviewed and implemented the necessary changes to collect and report data in line with government regulations, such as the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR). While the group has always reported their carbon usage in their annual accounts, they are now verifying the data with Planet Mark, a leading carbon tracking platform.
Planet Mark was founded by Steve Malkin and backed by the Eden Project. It is a sustainability certification that focuses on carbon reporting – measuring and disclosing the carbon emissions of a business. By getting Planet Mark certified Clowes can have a carbon reduction strategy, comply with legislation and improve operational efficiency without greenwashing. Daniel Houldey-Wright, utility coordinator for the group has been gathering energy usage data to meet SECR scope 1 and 2 requirements and for Planet Mark certification.
Thomas Clowes, James Richards and Kate Henderson are leading the development, implementation and ongoing management of the ESG strategy for the group.
The World Green Building Council says buildings are 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions: 28% operational emissions (heating, cooling, power) and 11% from the materials and construction process.
Having completed the first year of certification, BE Design will work with Thomas, James and Kate to refine the ESG strategy and develop specific carbon reduction initiatives, which will be published later this year. Clowes will also engage their ESG committee to empower employees across the group to support and deliver the ESG strategy.
