American Airlines (American) released its highly anticipated 2022 Sustainability Report, offering an insightful overview of its strategic initiatives and notable achievements throughout the year.

The report highlights American's unwavering dedication to prioritising sustainability issues crucial to its business and stakeholders, encompassing climate change, customer and team member safety, human capital, and exceptional customer service.

Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines, expressed his profound pride in the team's relentless efforts to expand their flight operations and reconnect people.

He commended their success in rebuilding the airline, fostering a diverse and talented workforce, and making significant strides towards their climate objectives.

American's comprehensive strategy for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 centres around operating a more fuel-efficient fleet, increasingly incorporating low-carbon fuel and advanced aircraft technologies.

Over the past few years, the airline has undergone an extensive fleet renewal project, resulting in one of the youngest mainline fleets among U.S. network carriers. In 2022, American achieved notable progress across their strategy, including adding state-of-the-art aircraft to their fleet, finalising a critical sustainable aviation fuel agreement, and announcing investments in companies focused on low-carbon, hydrogen-powered aviation development.

In a significant milestone, American became the first airline globally to receive validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for their intermediate 2035 GHG reduction targets, meeting the criteria outlined in the SBTi's inaugural aviation pathway.

Furthermore, American's Sustainability Report provides a comprehensive examination of the company's risk and opportunity landscape associated with climate change, following the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures.

Recognising that diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential elements of their culture, American Airlines has gained a competitive edge and strives to be the preferred airline for its customers.

The report delves into the company's robust initiatives to foster equal opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those historically underrepresented in the aviation industry. Moreover, American aims to enhance awareness, accessibility, and opportunities for anyone interested in pursuing an aviation career.

The driving force behind American's exceptional customer service lies within its dedicated team. Despite the rapid expansion of operations in 2022, the company remained steadfast in providing the reliability, dependability, and world-class experience its customers expect.

The relentless efforts of the American team culminated in the airline achieving its highest-ever customer satisfaction scores, as indicated by the Likelihood to Recommend metric. Moreover, American continues to prioritise the safety of both customers and team members with an unwavering commitment.

American Airlines' remarkable progress towards its sustainability goals has garnered widespread recognition and acclaim. In a notable achievement, the airline was honoured as the 2023 Air Transport World Eco-Airline of the Year. Additionally, American remains the sole passenger airline to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index for the second consecutive year in 2022.
