Zinc-Air Batteries Help Reduce Dependence on Lithium Batteries
According to the newly appointed Indian head of the International Zinc Association, zinc-air batteries have the potential to deliver a cost-effective and long-term solution for renewable energy storage.
Arun Misra, the first Indian to be elected chairman of the International Zinc Association, said zinc-air batteries have helped decrease reliance on lithium batteries, as only a few countries have access to this metal.
Observing that practically every company in the world is seeking renewable energy solutions to meet their sustainability goals, Misra said that one of the most difficult aspects of renewable energy is storage solutions, particularly fixed storage.
Misra added, "We firmly believe that zinc-air batteries will find a place and make it much easier for people to adapt to the storage solution."
The IZA Executive Committee chose Mishra, the chief executive officer of Hindustan Zinc Ltd, as the new Chair earlier this year. The International Zinc Association (IZA) is a non-profit organisation that represents the global zinc industry.
Its purpose is to improve zinc products and markets via research, development, technology transfer, and communication of the special characteristics that make zinc sustainable and important for life.
According to Misra, storage solutions are in high demand right now.
Considering that only a few countries control lithium supplies, Mishra believes that any government should diversify its resources for the same reason.
He stated, "We believe that zinc batteries will largely come into play, although they may start with lithium."
