Turtle Island Beach Resort in Belize is transitioning from diesel backup power generation to a battery-driven microgrid system fueled by clean energy to transition entirely to renewable energy use.

The battery energy storage and management system will be installed by On.Energy as part of an isolated microgrid platform for Solar Axiom at the Wyndham-operated resort located near San Pedro off the coast of Belize. The On.Energy platform will facilitate the transition to 100 per cent renewable energy at Turtle Island Beach Resort.

The On.Energy battery storage system will be integrated into an existing solar energy system. The Solar Axiom will assist the resort in storing solar-generated electricity during cloudy days. The batteries have autonomous operations and remote monitoring and require little maintenance.

According to the resort, the initiative facilitates sustainable transitions as it pursues current expansion goals. It also supports the green economy of Belize.

According to Solar Axiom, the microgrid will enable the Turtle Island Beach resort to complete a 100 per cent renewable energy loop, which is especially significant given its remote position. Last year, the company assisted in the development of a 175-kilowatt system at the resort.

Microgrids are rapidly being deployed in several areas to enhance energy resilience and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.

They have been installed in San Diego, military bases, and businesses, including six bakeries in California. According to Research and Markets, the global microgrid industry is anticipated to surpass $40 billion by 2026.

Other resorts have also lately implemented energy efficiency initiatives. This year, Bahia Principe Hotels and Resorts is investing more than $1.6 million in renewable energy, and Celtic Manor Resort in Wales has helped lower yearly energy expenses by $1.25 million through several projects.

According to the Alliance to Save Energy, microgrids can assist a location to generate energy efficiently by limiting what is required for production on-site without relying on a broader grid system. The energy systems can also be assisted with digital tools, such as intelligent energy management systems.

Solar Axiom has numerous current projects in the Caribbean, including locations in Honduras and the British Virgin Islands, in addition to Turtle Island. Other On.Energy projects include Nicaraguan and Peruvian sites.
