Anthony Albanese, the new Australian Prime Minister, recently said at the Tokyo summit that his goals are aligned with those of the Quad group members, and he wants to discuss climate change with the United States, India, and Japan.
Albanese, the Labour Party's leader who was sworn in as Australia's 31st prime minister the day before, said the Quad stood together for a "free and open Indo-Pacific."
The informal coalition of countries, led by the United States, was formed as a possible bulwark against China's growing political, commercial, and military presence in the Indo-Pacific.
In his opening remarks, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the Russian invasion of Ukraine was a "frontal challenge" to the United Nations Charter's principles and that similar events should never happen in the Indo-Pacific.
