Key Takeaways

  • A new report by GrainGrowers compares carbon calculators for grain growers.

  • The report aims to increase carbon literacy so growers can understand and manage their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

  • The report compares G-GAF V10.9 and CFT V2.10.0 using real farm data.

GrainGrowers has released a new report to help grain growers get a handle on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by comparing carbon calculators.

Sarah Hyland, General Manager Major Projects and Thought Leadership at GrainGrowers, says the report helps growers get a grip on their carbon footprint. Understanding emissions is key to benchmarking and finding ways to improve and reduce costs over time.

Hyland says the report provides an independent assessment of two carbon calculators used by Australian grain growers. It compares the Grains Greenhouse Gas Accounting Framework (G-GAF) V10.9 and the Cool Farm Tool (CFT) V2.10.0 in a simple way using real farm data.

The report explains the benefits of using a carbon calculator, focusing on three steps: Realise, Report, and Reduce. First, growers need to identify their emissions. Next, they need to report those emissions to various stakeholders such as bulk handlers, customers, banks, investors and shareholders who are asking for this information. Finally, reducing emissions can improve efficiency and profitability and meet the expectations of supply chain partners and international customers who are looking for evidence of GHG reductions.

Hyland also mentioned GrainGrowers’ support for a national framework for GHG accounting in agriculture. A consistent approach with the same methodologies and tools is needed for accurate tracking and reporting of emissions.

The report supports the Grains Sustainability Framework (GSF), which tracks and reports on the grains industry’s sustainability. It also aligns with new Australian legislation requiring climate-related financial disclosures.
