The Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) is now an official Supporter of the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).

The initiative brings together the United Nations and financial institutions from all over the world to help make a plan for a sustainable financial future. Through this partnership, UNEP has set up frameworks for sustainability that look at global environmental, social, and governance challenges from a financial point of view.

“Understanding the close relationship between climate change and sustainability risks and the global economy is key to mitigating these risks and developing a necessary action plan,” says CIA President Hélène Pouliot, FCIA. "As our country's national actuarial professional organisation and a leader in risk quantification and risk management, the CIA is happy to share its knowledge for the benefit of the global financial system."

While membership in UNEP FI is limited to financial institutions, Supporter status is available to those organisations that play a critical role in delivering sustainable finance and wish to collaborate with UNEP in achieving this objective. In North America, 15 organisations now hold Supporter status.

By taking part in this initiative, the CIA hopes to share its knowledge on a national and international scale. It will do this by helping financial institutions meet sustainability goals and set up sustainability frameworks, as well as by doing thematic research, giving advice, and supporting communities of practice.
