The programme addresses global agricultural challenges and meets the growing demand for food produced sustainably.
Symrise is taking its secure sourcing to the next level to tackle the complexity of climate change and geopolitical factors impacting agricultural production.
These factors affect the availability and quality of raw materials so Symrise uses its agronomy and sustainability expertise to ensure a steady supply of natural ingredients for its customers.
As a major player in the natural ingredients market, Symrise is securing the agro-food supply chain. It has developed a detailed programme of sustainable sourcing strategies to cope with global climate changes and business continuity. This programme includes various risk management measures.
Comprehensive Risk Assessment for Sustainable Sourcing
In 2022, Symrise’s Food & Beverage Naturals Agronomy team started a long-term risk assessment. This analysis covered water, climate, labour and land risks for various fruits and vegetables, including mushrooms, bananas and strawberries, for 2030.
Barbara Malmezat, Global Purchasing and Risk Director at Symrise F&B Naturals says: “This lays the foundation for imagining the future of sustainable agricultural landscapes, with both continuous improvements and disruptive innovations.”
The agronomists used this data to develop actionable solutions under the “secure sourcing, sustainably” approach. This includes working with farmers to adopt regenerative agriculture, using smart farming to sequester carbon and identifying drought-tolerant crop varieties.
Sustainable Agricultural Solutions are working
The “secure sourcing, sustainably” programme is already paying off, especially in carrots. With fluctuating fertiliser prices, Symrise supports farmers by promoting regenerative farming practices. This means alternatives to synthetic inputs, biodiversity, carbon sequestration and water use efficiency and reducing farmers’ profitability risks. This benefits food and beverage manufacturers by having a steady carrot supply and reducing the carbon footprint, making agriculture more sustainable.
Global Agricultural Challenges
The global agro-food sector is facing many challenges: climate change, geopolitical tensions, population growth and regulatory pressures. And consumers are demanding more and more food produced sustainably with natural ingredients. Symrise’s programme helps food and beverage manufacturers navigate these challenges, secure their supply chain and meet consumer expectations.
