Samsung Electronics Breaks Ground on New Semiconductor R&D Complex

Samsung Electronics broke ground on a new semiconductor research and development centre in Giheung, Korea, to expand its leadership in cutting-edge semiconductor technology.

Samsung Electronics intends to invest approximately KRW 20 trillion by 2028 in the complex, which will span approximately 109,000 square metres on its Giheung site. The new laboratory will spearhead advanced research on next-generation memory and system semiconductor devices and processes, as well as the creation of breakthrough new technologies based on a long-term plan.

Today's groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee, President and CEO Kye Hyun Kyung, Memory Business President Jung-Bae Lee, Foundry Business President Siyoung Choi, and S.LSI Business President Yong-In Park, as well as over 100 employees.

President Kye Hyun Kyung, who also heads the Device Solutions (DS) Division, said:

"Our new state-of-the-art R&D complex will become a hub for innovation where the best research talent from around the world can come and grow together. We expect this new beginning will lay the foundation for sustainable growth of our semiconductor business.”

Samsung Electronics aims to overcome the restrictions of semiconductor scaling and strengthen its competitive edge in semiconductor technology by establishing a new R&D facility.

The Giheung site of Samsung Electronics, located south of Seoul near the DS Division's Hwaseong campus, was the birthplace of the world's first 64Mb DRAM in 1992, launching the company's semiconductor leadership.

The new Giheung R&D facility, together with the R&D line in Hwaseong and the world's largest semiconductor production complex in Pyeongtaek, is also planned to improve synergy between Samsung's three major semiconductor complexes in the metropolitan area.

Following the ceremony, Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee visited the Hwaseong campus to meet with DS Division employees and discuss ways to boost innovation within the company. At a separate meeting with DS Division executives, topics covered included current difficulties in the global semiconductor industry, the advancement of next-generation semiconductor technology R&D, and measures to secure technology to extend semiconductor leadership.
