MSC Adds New Electric Trains to Boost Rail Fleet

MSC has expanded its rail fleet at its newest MEDWAY branch in Belgium by placing an order for 15 new electric locomotives.
This strategic move aims to enhance capacity at the crucial Northwest Continent terminal and facilitate cross-border freight transport within Europe. Additionally, the locomotives will complement container transport by ship, benefiting the eastern hinterland of Antwerp.
Salvatore Prudente, Executive Director of MEDWAY, emphasised that MSC's investment in its MEDWAY arm is geared towards strengthening its intermodal services.
This not only improves its ability to offer core deep-sea solutions but also inland logistics. The focus is on providing customers with a diverse range of services that simplify and bolster their supply chains.
The selected Vectron MS locomotives, manufactured by Siemens Mobility, boast a top speed of 160 km/h. According to Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, their reputation for dependability and flexibility makes them ideal for sustainable cross-border freight transportation across Europe.
With deployment spanning an East-West geographical scope, the new locomotives will enhance connectivity and capacity between Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and other central and Eastern areas. This will offer customers a more versatile, efficient, and eco-friendly means of inland cargo transportation.
Operating under MSC's inland logistics partner MEDLOG, MEDWAY Belgium holds licenses as a freight rail operator in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria. Since commencing operations in July 2022, MEDWAY has played a significant role in rail operations across Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Spain, and Italy and owns rolling stock operated by partners in Turkey and India. Moreover, it possesses a global fleet of 115 locomotives and 4,800+ railcars, running over 40,000 trains annually and covering more than 8.2 million km.
