Kuehne+Nagel: Carbon Insetting for HVO, E-Trucks
Kuehne + Nagel International AG

Kuehne+Nagel has unveiled an innovative solution known as Book & Claim, aimed at empowering road logistics customers who opt for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to curtail their transport-related emissions.
This strategic move seamlessly complements their pre-existing offerings in Sea and Air Logistics, where they provide maritime biofuels and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), respectively.
The comprehensive Book & Claim initiative not only reinforces Kuehne+Nagel's commitment to science-backed emission reduction targets but also propels the entire logistics industry towards a greener future.
To formulate the Book & Claim offering for HVO, Kuehne+Nagel fostered partnerships with external stakeholders, meticulously testing and validating the concept's scientific and methodological robustness. Drawing from their extensive experience in Sea and Air Logistics, the groundwork was laid for this transformative project.
Hansjörg Rodi, Board Member for Road Logistics at Kuehne+Nagel, emphasised, "Expanding our portfolio of low-emission solutions is a pivotal component of our Roadmap 2026's Living ESG pillar. By opting for HVO, customers can actively diminish carbon emissions across their value chains. This not only drives up demand but also paves the way for an increased supply of low-emission technologies, thus expediting the decarbonisation of road logistics."
Initially, the Book & Claim for HVO will cater to European customers, with plans to extend its reach beyond European borders in 2024. Additionally, the team is actively engaged in integrating electric vehicles into the solution, with Rodi expressing confidence that "to decarbonise road logistics, we see HVO as a transitional solution, with battery-electric vehicles taking centre stage in the future. We anticipate this transition to be ready by the end of 2023."
