IHG Hotels & Resorts, a renowned hospitality company, is making waves in sustainable tourism with the upcoming launch of voco Zeal Exeter Science Park, a groundbreaking partnership with Zeal Hotels.

This ambitious project will mark the world's first lifecycle net zero carbon hotel for both organisations, exemplifying their commitment to responsible business practices.

The momentous exclusivity agreement between IHG and Zeal was announced at the prestigious International Hotel Investment Forum (IHIF) in Berlin earlier this year. The meticulously constructed voco Zeal Exeter Science Park will host its first visitors in 2024 in accordance with the UK Green Building Council's Net Zero Carbon Buildings Framework Definition.

With an extensive portfolio of more than 6,000 properties spanning over 100 countries, IHG is dedicated to empowering hotel owners in their journey towards decarbonisation and future-proofing their assets. This not only ensures long-term business viability but also underscores their commitment to reducing environmental impact.

Karin Sheppard, Senior Vice President Managing Director, Europe, IHG Hotels & Resorts, expressed her excitement about voco Zeal Exeter Science Park, lauding it as IHG's inaugural lifecycle net zero carbon hotel. Nestled in the enchanting landscapes of southwest England, this remarkable property is a testament to IHG and Zeal's shared vision of conducting business with sustainability at the forefront.

This partnership with Zeal adds to IHG's recent successes in the UK, further solidifying the progress made under their "Journey to Tomorrow" 10-year responsible business plan. Among its portfolio of brands, voco stands out as the fastest-growing, attracting owners from around the globe due to its conversion-friendly approach.

Tim Wheeldon, Managing Director of Zeal Hotels, expressed pride in collaborating with IHG on this vital venture that aims to create a positive impact on the world. As they join forces, both companies are committed to sharing knowledge and driving the hospitality industry forward in terms of sustainability.

The franchise agreement, alongside management by Valor Hospitality, will bring to life a 142-key hotel located in the scenic city of Exeter. The hotel will offer an array of amenities for leisure and business guests, including a restaurant, bar, gym, gardens, meeting spaces, and multiple car charging points.

Positioned adjacent to J29 of the M5 motorway and just a short drive from Exeter Airport, voco Zeal Exeter Science Park will be situated at the heart of Exeter Science Park, a hub for science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) businesses, encompassing around 822,000 sq ft of cutting-edge facilities.

IHG's "Journey to Tomorrow" plan is aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals, demonstrating their dedication to caring for people, communities, and the planet. The company has set science-based targets in line with a 1.5C future, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. Ensuring that all new-build hotels operate at significantly low carbon emissions by 2030 is an integral part of IHG's sustainable growth strategy.

Among IHG's premium brands, voco has experienced unparalleled global expansion, with 46 hotels currently open worldwide and 59 properties in the pipeline. Present in 18 countries, voco's upcoming ventures include the brand's debut in Poland, Malta, and Cyprus. Recognising its exceptional appeal, voco was honoured as the World's Leading Premium Hotel Brand at the esteemed 2022 World Travel Awards.

With voco Zeal Exeter Science Park leading the charge towards a greener future, IHG and Zeal are setting an inspiring example for the hospitality industry and beyond. This pioneering project reflects their shared determination to craft a sustainable legacy while delivering memorable experiences to guests who prioritise environmental responsibility.
