Centrica
With this acquisition, Centrica invests in green energy, improves energy storage, and supports renewable power growth in Europe.
Sustainable venture capital firm LRM sold the Terhills battery project to Centrica.
Centrica, an energy services company operating mainly in the UK and Ireland, has bought an 18 MW battery storage project in Belgium called the Terhills battery park, expanding its green power portfolio.
The facility has been operating with the help of Centrica since 2018. Through this acquisition, the company aims to grow its green energy investments and move towards a more sustainable future.
The company uses a larger system that helps balance electricity supply and demand in Europe, with the Terhills battery park playing a part by supporting renewable energy sources like wind and solar. It also operates a virtual power plant in Belgium, combining the Terhills battery with energy from various industrial customers.
Chris O’Shea, Group CEO at Centrica, said: “We have deep knowledge of the Belgian market, with our amazing Antwerp-based team delivering demand side response, grid optimisation and research activities, so we feel very confident investing in battery storage here. And we know Terhills well as we’ve been optimising it for the past 6 years. We’ll continue to maximise the output of the batteries, helping to provide back-up to the renewables grid and encouraging the growth of solar and wind power in Belgium.”
