Amey Spearheads NHS's Net Zero Journey
Amey has forged a partnership with NHS Shared Business Services (NHS SBS) to spearhead the decarbonisation of the NHS's transportation infrastructure.
The comprehensive life-cycle engineering provider has revealed its commitment to driving decarbonisation by investing in sustainable transport, encompassing active travel, micro-mobility, and electric vehicles.
At the core of Amey's initiative is data-led asset management, employing innovative technologies to curtail carbon emissions and enhance air quality. Leveraging its mobile network data capabilities, Amey aims to influence decision-making processes and reshape travel patterns across the network.
This development follows Amey's appointment to the NHS SBS's Sustainable Transport & Infrastructure framework, specifically focusing on Lot 1: Sustainable Transport Consultancy. The NHS, a publicly funded health service in the UK, operates an extensive transport network, contributing to 4% of the nation's total carbon footprint. NHS England highlights that travel and transport emissions constitute 14% of its overall carbon footprint.
Anjub Ali, senior category specialist for construction and infrastructure at NHS SBS, expressed, "This second-generation framework aligns with NHS Green Travel Plans and has been developed in collaboration with NHS Sustainability, Estates, and Procurement colleagues. The objective is to offer a range of sustainable transport services and infrastructure to assist the NHS and the broader public sector in lowering carbon outputs and achieving carbon net-zero targets."
Alex Gilbert, Managing Director – Consulting at Amey, commented on the appointment, stating, "We are thrilled to be chosen for the NHS SBS’s Sustainable Transport & Infrastructure framework. Given the NHS's extensive and crucial transport network, it is imperative to develop and implement net zero and decarbonisation strategies to ensure the sustainability of this network. Amey is poised to bring its advisory and analytics expertise to the NHS and the wider public sector, not only to design, implement, and integrate optimal transport infrastructure but also to instigate a fundamental shift in behaviours and instill a greener mindset throughout the NHS."
According to the NHS's 'Net Zero Travel and Transport Strategy,' by 2033, staff travel emissions are targeted to decrease by 50%, achieved through transitioning to more sustainable forms of travel and electrifying personal vehicles. Starting in 2030, all new ambulances will be zero-emission vehicles, and by 2040, all owned, leased, and commissioned vehicles will be zero-emission.
The Sustainable Transport & Infrastructure framework is expected to play a pivotal role in establishing the necessary infrastructure to meet these ambitious goals, with its duration extending until 2027.
