Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) released its sustainability report, keeping stakeholders up-to-date on their progress.

This report aligns with Sempra's overall sustainability goals of safety, community engagement, and innovation.

The report details SoCalGas's efforts to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. It highlights their work on infrastructure upgrades, clean fuels, affordable energy access, and community investment.

“Sustainability is a fundamental part of our business strategy. The progress in this report represents our next step in an exciting evolution in serving customers and communities while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting energy efficiency and resiliency, and advancing California’s climate goals,” says Jawaad Malik Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer at SoCalGas. “Our ASPIRE 2045 sustainability strategy focuses on key areas where we can create strong positive benefits for our customers, employees, and the communities we serve.”

2023 Report Highlights

  • Reduced methane emissions by 39% by 2022, exceeding state goals.

  • Enrolled all eligible grid-connected facilities in green energy programmes (where available).

  • Converted 38% of their fleet to alternative fuels, aiming for 100% zero-emission vehicles by 2035.

  • Helped 100% of eligible customers access affordable energy programmes.

  • Delivered 100% renewable natural gas (RNG) at their refuelling stations.

  • Achieved a 26% reduction in pipeline damage, working towards a 40% target by 2030.

  • Spent over $1 billion with diverse suppliers, including many new businesses in 2023.

"Thanks to SoCalGas' Climate Champions Grant program, our organization was better equipped to take on ecosystem degradation in the Santa Monica Mountains and increase biodiversity while creating employment opportunities for disadvantaged youths with limited resources," said Deanna Armbruster, Executive Director at Santa Monica Mountains Fund. "SoCalGas' sustainability investments continue to play a vital role in fostering community development, promoting environmental stewardship, and improving the well-being of in our local communities."

SoCalGas is a leader in sustainability among utilities. They were one of the first to set a net-zero goal by 2045, and their energy efficiency programmes are some of the largest in the country. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded them the ENERGY STAR "Partner of the Year" award for two years in a row, recognising their efforts to reduce methane emissions.

SoCalGas was also recently honoured for their innovative sustainability efforts. Their hydrogen microgrid project was named a World-Changing Idea, and they won awards for their overall sustainability approach.
