The Salt Lake City Department of Airports (SLCDA) has unveiled its annual Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report, spotlighting the airport's endeavours to mitigate adverse environmental effects and uphold the highest benchmarks in establishing a more sustainable aviation hub.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • Energy Efficiency: Notable reduction in overall energy consumption attained by transitioning to LED illumination, utilisation of external renewable energy sources, and deployment of on-site solar arrays.

  • Greenhouse Gas Reduction (GHG): Airlines mandated to shift to electric belt loaders, baggage tugs, and pushback tractors; curtailed aircraft taxi durations via The New SLC airport's parallel concourse layout; incorporation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for both private and airport-related automobiles.

  • Water Conservation: Implementation of low-flow and sensor-triggered water fixtures resulting in approximately 40% lower consumption; recycling of deicing fluids; introduction of drought-resistant landscaping.

  • Waste Management: Slashed single-use plastics through the installation of water bottle refill stations; diverted 90% of construction waste from landfills through effective reuse and recycling strategies.

Bill Wyatt, Executive Director of SLCDA, affirmed, "Our achievements in sustainability fill us with pride, and we maintain an unwavering commitment to this cause. Nevertheless, we acknowledge the need for further endeavours." He added, "We remain dedicated to identifying novel opportunities to curtail the airport's ecological footprint."

In 2021, SLC was bestowed with LEED Gold Certification for the initial phase of its construction initiative and is steadily advancing towards attaining certification for the comprehensive project upon its culmination in 2026/27.
