Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, Inc. has published its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report for fiscal year 2023.

In this third annual report, the expanding speciality retailer highlights its ongoing commitment to practices that help the environment, support human health, and benefit communities, including new product standards introduced during the year.

Established in 1955, this family-owned speciality retailer believes it can make a positive impact on environmental sustainability and human health by choosing products from vendors that prioritise regenerative and sustainable farming practices.

Kemper Isely, Executive Co-President of Natural Grocers, said, "We've always been a company driven by values. Over 68 years, we've shown our dedication to practices that promote a more sustainable and accessible food system." He added, "Our ESG Report for this year demonstrates our strict product standards and our ongoing commitment to practices and products that support environmental and human health. We aim to work with vendors who care for the land and animals, as we believe this helps create a healthier planet, stronger communities, and a better economy."

Natural Grocers hopes to inspire other companies to adopt environmentally friendly practices while offering high-quality organic and natural products at fair prices.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2023 REPORT:

  • Invested over $6 million in providing free nutrition education to customers, Crew, and communities.

  • Possibly the first national retailer to offer private-label eggs from regenerative certified farms, using a rigorous certification process to assess soil health and farming practices.

  • Expanded the requirement for certified organic products to its entire coffee category, supporting organic farming and transparency.

  • Installed a CO2 refrigeration system in a second store, saving energy and protecting the environment compared to conventional refrigerants.
