A new survey by PDI Technologies reveals a growing trend: consumers are demanding sustainable options in the fuel and convenience retail industry.

The 2024 "Sustainability, EV, and Convenience Retail Survey Report" shows a substantial rise in environmentally conscious consumers.

Key findings

  • Consumers are willing to pay more for sustainability: 80% of respondents expressed concern about the environmental impact of their purchases, up from 66% in 2022. This translates to action at the pump, with 65% of Americans willing to pay more for gas with carbon offsetting.

  • Sustainability expectations extend beyond fuel: Inside convenience stores, 38% of respondents believe stores should be resource-efficient and 34% expect sustainable packaging from brands.

“The data is clear,” said Maryann Michela, Senior Director, PDI Technologies. “Between these statistics and the regulatory conversations that are happening in our industry, there are more compelling reasons than ever for retailers and brands to understand and act upon consumer sentiment toward sustainable businesses. This movement reaches beyond the US, with consumer sentiment and regulations more prevalent in regions like EMEA and others.”

Electric Vehicle Challenges

The survey also highlights challenges in the Electric Vehicle (EV) market. Nearly half of respondents (47%) again cited "range anxiety" - the fear of running out of battery power - as their top concern.
