IFF published its 2023 Do More Good Report, highlighting its progress on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives.

The report details how IFF's innovations helped customers and consumers avoid an estimated 24.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

“Sustainability for us at IFF is more than just a cost of doing business today – it drives everything we do,” said Erik Fyrwald, IFF CEO. “Our passion for sustainable innovation, coupled with ambitious target-setting is vital in helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals and targets.”

This marks the third year of IFF's Do More Good™ Plan, launched in 2021 to drive industry-wide progress towards sustainable development. The plan focuses on four pillars: Sustainable Solutions, Climate & Planetary Health, Equity & Wellbeing, and Transparency & Accountability. The report also details IFF's achievements in each area, aligned with a double materiality assessment that identifies the most significant ESG topics for the company and society.

Key Highlights from 2023

  • ESG Leadership: IFF secured a spot in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices North America for the fourth year in a row.

  • Human Rights: IFF completed human rights assessments for key supply chains in six countries.

  • Reduced Emissions: The company achieved a 21% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2021 levels.

  • Waste Management: Ten additional IFF facilities achieved zero waste to landfill status, bringing the total to 51 major manufacturing sites.

  • Gender Equality: IFF achieved gender pay parity in 27 countries assessed.

  • Employee Training: All employees completed annual business ethics training.

Sustainable Innovation in Action

The report showcases examples of how sustainability drives innovation. IFF, a major buyer of seaweed for various applications, partnered with Bellona, an environmental NGO, to restore seaweed forests in Norway ravaged by invasive sea urchins. This restoration effort, returning over 5,000 km² of barren land to vibrant kelp forests, provided inspiration for the report's visuals.

Transparency and Verification

IFF engaged an independent party to assess the report's completeness and balance regarding its sustainability efforts, aligned with GRI Standards. The report upholds IFF's commitment to standards-compliant sustainability reporting since 2010.
