Singapore-headquartered multipurpose/heavy-lift carrier AAL Shipping has published its sustainability report, utilising disclosure requirements outlined by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

AAL’s 2022 sustainability report is the first it has developed with a rigid GRI framework and then released publicly, said Felix Schoeller, AAL director and head of the carrier’s sustainability committee.

Few from the heavy lift/multipurpose shipping sector have published such reports. “We recognise that our global activities can have a significant impact on the environment and the communities in which we operate. As such, we have committed to ensuring that we work in a manner that is sustainable, ethical, and socially responsible,” Schoeller added.

The 104-page report, which can be seen here, details multiple aspects of AAL’s operations on land and sea, its diverse teams globally, and the systems, processes, and extracurricular activities developed to support them, Schoeller added.

The report was produced by AAL’s sustainability committee comprising Schoeller along with Valentin Gherciu, global head of operations; John Pittalis, head of marketing and communications; and Steward Chen, business analyst. AAL was further supported by specialist sustainability adviser Grow Sustainability Consulting, which is based in Cyprus.

Kyriacos Panayides, AAL Shipping’s CEO, said: “As the entire industry is focusing its resources on decarbonisation and emissions reduction through the adoption of alternative fuels, we are striving to do our part by harmonising sustainable systems and operations within AAL and through the expanded transportation of industrial components that generate new forms of renewable power, like the wind.

“The regulatory framework regarding energy efficiency has become more demanding around the world, but shipping is not new to strict rules and regulations, and here at AAL, we are embracing this change as it is sure to make us all more innovative, efficient, and sustainable.

“The alignment of our ESG goals and values with those of our key stakeholders, both internally and externally, is crucial on our journey to sustainability.”
