In a major win for the telecom industry in India, Reliance Jio has won the prestigious Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) award at the 2nd ESG Summit and Awards events that were organised by Transformance Forums in Mumbai. It is a major victory for the company as it received the highest rating awarded to any Telecom sector company in India and, as a result, it has garnered a lot of positive attention from potential investors, stakeholders and employees.

The award was distributed to the company for its significant efforts in combating climate change, primarily, how it has effectively adopted renewable energy and minimised its use of fossil fuels along with demonstrating the main ESG factors in its various fields like agriculture, healthcare and education. Another important factor for winning the award was the indigenous development of its 5G technology stack that prioritises environmental, social and governance aspects in its overall process. It is important to note that Reliance Jio, through its digital initiatives, is helping Indians use high-quality products at an affordable range not only limited to the telecom sector but across business verticals and the customer lifecycle. As a result, they are directly contributing towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and helping tackle the problem of climate change via the transition to sustainability.

The company is continuously progressing forward towards its commitment to becoming net zero by 2035. It has set up around 144MV of solar panels at 16,000 sites in India and has plans to transition to green hydrogen production by 2025. Along with this, it aims to start production of battery packs by 2023 and reach an annual capacity of 50GWh by 2027. Talking about the importance of clean energy at a virtual conference, the Chairman of Reliance Industries Limited, Mukesh Ambani said, “Think green. The clean energy movement is about adopting a green mindset. It is about being sensitive to mother nature. It is about inventing means to harvest its energy without harming it. Also, it is about ensuring that we leave behind a better and a healthier planet for the future generations.”
