GREEN CLAIMS AND GREEN WASHING Communicating Sustainability

On 22 March 2023, the Commission published a proposal for a Directive on Green Claims .

The proposal addresses the problem of greenwashing, tackling false environmental claims made to consumers and ending the proliferation of public and private environmental labels.

Together with the proposed Directive on consumer empowerment for the green transition, the new rules establish a clear regime for environmental claims and labels to ensure that consumers receive reliable information on the environmental characteristics of the products they buy.

The conference is an opportunity to explore issues related to greenwashing, i.e. those commercial practices that describe a product as 'green' or 'sustainable' for the sole purpose of improving its image and making it more attractive, even where standards of basis.

The conference aims to identify the key points that a correct narrative of sustainability must have in order not to fall into the increasingly widespread practice of greenwashing.
