Vietjet Takes Off First Flights with Sustainable Aviation Fuel
The sustainable fuel for the flights was provided by Petrolimex Aviation.
This achievement extends the airline's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
Vietjet, an airline that operates domestic and international flights in Vietnam and Asia, has flown its first flights with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Vietnam.
The flights took off from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City; one headed for Melbourne, Australia, and the other for Seoul, South Korea.
SAF is made from sustainable materials like used cooking oil and agricultural waste. It reduces carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuels and meets international safety standards for commercial flights.
This is a huge leap forward for the aviation sector in Vietnam, which aims to reduce its carbon footprint and operate flights sustainably.
Vietjet CEO, Mr. Dinh Viet Phuong said: "Today’s Vietjet flights using SAF are particularly meaningful, symbolizing green flights and eco-friendly air travel, offering passengers a wonderful, environmentally-conscious flying experience, especially on international routes. As a pioneering airline in the research, development and usage of SAF, Vietjet remains committed to further reducing carbon emissions in aviation and fostering sustainable growth."
Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Mr. Dinh Viet Thang said: "Vietjet Air and Petrolimex Aviation have successfully conducted the first international flights using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) being fueled in Vietnam, clearly demonstrating their commitment to sustainable fuel usage. This is a collective source of pride for the entire industry as we contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development, affirming Vietnam's role as a responsible member of the global aviation community."
Vietjet is committed to ESG and sustainable development. To this end, it has taken several sustainable initiatives, such as tree planting and using electronic tickets and sustainable materials. The airline also supports Vietnam's net-zero emissions targets by 2050 and has published an ESG report detailing its progress.
